About the Department
The New Mexico Department of Veterans Services (DVS) provides support and services for New Mexico’s veterans and their families. DVS treats every veteran, regardless of their rank achieved during military service, with the respect and gratitude befitting someone who has served our country. We strive every day to live up to our agency’s official motto: Serving Those Who Served. To us, every day is Veterans Day.

Cabinet Secretary: Sonya L. Smith
Sonya L. Smith is a veteran and health care professional. In the Gulf War she served as a medical technician in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. A member of the U.S. Air Force Reserve, she received an honorable discharge. Smith most recently worked at the New Mexico Department of Health as a special projects coordinator, specifically helping guide the efforts of the agency’s COVID-19 testing team. Prior to that, she served as director of compliance and primary care programs at Southwest Care Center in Santa Fe, and before that she worked as the clinical compliance manager at the University of New Mexico Truman Health Services clinic. Smith earned a bachelor’s degree in health services management from Norfolk State University in Norfolk, Va.
